I think they made it up. Two data points: 1) no trace of it anywhere on the internet, and 2) they all seemed to love pairing it with vapor.js which also seems to be a joke. I'm guessing they won't have an episode exactly on April Fool's Day and so we're being tormented early.

(That seems outside parameters to me. But I have a long history of hating the Internet on (and, these days, around) April Fool's Day, so what do I know?)

If also possible I would like to see a pure html js without any C# on the client side. An application that can be compiled using phone gap.

Very interesting topic. I'm from RDB-crowd. For a long time as DBA I was working with OLTP/OLAP environments using MS Sql, Oracle, MySQL systems. Recently I tried to use nosql to create proof of concept for one of my projects which faces typical database issues - combining OLTP with OLAP (at least basics of it).
Tested MongoDB and RavenDB. Since I'm using .NET stack RavenDB seemed ideal to me. Speed of inserts is fantastic. But hey. It's no surprise if you understand you're just writing into flat file. Unfortunately immediately after that came disappointment. Idea of index running on background is fine while index is capable of doing what I need. It's not the case here. If you need at least some basic analytics (group by, count(), sum()) either forget about nosql solution or be prepared to develop extra layer/ETL for pushing data into some other DB-warehouse engine. So far I was not able to find one working example proving I'm wrong. And I would be glad to to be wrong. Because the major characteristics of nosql - scalability and super fast data inserts are very sweet baits for me.

Very interesting topic. I’m from RDB-crowd. For a long time as DBA I was working with OLTP/OLAP environments using MS Sql, Oracle, MySQL systems. Recently I tried to use nosql to create proof of concept for one of my projects which faces typical database issues – combining OLTP with OLAP (at least basics of it).
Tested MongoDB and RavenDB. Since I’m using .NET stack RavenDB seemed ideal to me. Speed of inserts is fantastic. But hey. It’s no surprise if you understand you’re just writing into flat file. Unfortunately immediately after that came disappointment. Idea of index running on background is fine while index is capable of doing what I need. It’s not the case here. If you need at least some basic analytics (group by, count(), sum()) either forget about nosql solution or be prepared to develop extra layer/ETL for pushing data into some other DB-warehouse engine. So far I was not able to find one working example proving I’m wrong. And I would be glad to to be wrong. Because the major characteristics of nosql – scalability and super fast data inserts are very sweet baits for me.

Great show! Oak sounds like one of the most pragmatic projects to come out in a long time. I'm sure a lot of people would think trying to marry Ruby, C#, and F#; dynamic and static languages and approaches is just a lot of stuff to have to learn and maintain. However, as Amir noted, all those tools have sweet spots. I find it very refreshing to see someone out the lie of perceived complexity. Very well done, Oak team!

Great episode with a lot of useful tips.

This is a small help for Jon Galloways frustration regarding typing in the passphrase on every commit. You don't have to put in your passphrase everytime, there is a work around. Git has a configuration called askpass which allow you to execute a program when git asks for password. I hacked together a small program that allows you to store your password in the protected storage: https://github.com/mastoj/EasyPass, and then you can set this program to be executed through the askpass configuration.

It is a hacky solution but it works.

In the show it was mentioned that Visual Studio extensions are possibly responsible for incorrect / inconsistent line endings. In particular VsVim was mentioned as possible offender.

This was definitely the case in VsVim up until version 1.1. New lines were incorrectly hard coded to CRLF even if the file was LF. Since version 1.1 it now uses the Visual Studio mechanism for line ending detection. If you see any more problems please do send me a bug report.

Issue tracking bad line ending handling.

For the windows-based developer, GitExtensions is really just a fantastic way to go. It's "visual" yet stays close the core of Git, so you can come up to speed quickly. It works with Visual Studio, but frankly we don't bother with that.

http://nvie.com/archives/323 also helped provide nice info and visual guidance on branching.

Between those two things, it works great. I dragged my feet on changing version control systems for a LONG time (as much as I hated VSS, it worked and was simple, unlike TFS). Now I think Git and source control is a great and useful thing!

FYI a really easy way to collapse a bunch of local (unpushed) commits in Mercurial is 'hg strip -k'. Combine that with 'hg rebase' of local branches you haven't pushed yet, and 'hg push -b' and you can do most of the local history editing / per-branch pushing options you're talking about as git advantages.

Much of the problem is the Mercurial documentation leads you to think you need Mercurial Queues to perform this stuff. You really don't - git is still more 'natural' about these things, but you can still do them.

Well, if I recall that correctly someone mentioned, that you were using WLW for blogging on a big monitor with a big resolution. Did I get that correctly, that you somehow increase the display font size of WLW, so that you can actually read what you're typing? How did you do that?

On the subject of backups, I wanted to point out the excellent CrashPlan (from http://www.crashplan.com). CrashPlan sits in the background on your machine (Windows, Mac or Linux) and sends updates to multiple backup destinations automatically.

CrashPlan Free lets you send your backups to multiple destinations: a local drive, another computer on the same lan, or another computer across the internet.

A friend and I use this for off-site backups. My laptop, my wife's laptop, our kidputer and server all back up "online" from our home in Wellington NZ to my friends media centre in Christchurch, NZ. His laptop, his wife's laptop and his media centre all back up to my server. Either of us could endure a house fire (or earthquake, touch wood) and lose no more than a days files.

CrashPlan+ adds cloud storage and real time updates for a low price.

Great show guys. I wanted to leave a note regarding the virtualization topic from the beginning of the episode. I havent used vmware out side of the server room yet, but i am using VirtualBox on my MBPro and the Windows boxes inside that are the fastest windows machines I've ever used. I just picked up a quad core 2.3 ghz i7 with a big 7200 rpm drive; and those VMs are just wicked; faster than most physical machines I've installed windows on. I am very pleases with how well VirtualBox runs on the mac book pro. Definately worth test driving as you're figuring out which virtual machine engine works best for your windows needs. Take care guys!!!

Well I learned that John plays the bass. I love music but never played until I started with Rockband. After 4 weeks (playing rock band and getting ok on drums) I said, lets learn the real thing and bought a Bass 9and some drums). Now our family jams on real instruments and I am ready to try Rocksmith.
